Successful migration of all MIC customers to the upgraded customs system CDS in the UK

News | Customs Filing 14 May 2024

Around 6 years after the British customs authority HMRC had announced the conversion of the CHIEF customs system to the new Customs Declaration Service (CDS), MIC was able to complete the migration of all customers even before the deadline of 4 June 2024. For imports, the transition to CDS already took place in 2022.

MIC has finalised the product implementation for CDS export already in 2023. A phased changeover launched by HMRC enabled us to fully migrate all MIC customers in spring 2024. The overall project was smoothly completed.” –Thomas Aigner, Product Owner MIC.

The replacement of CHIEF by CDS marks a significant milestone in modern customs processing in the UK, both in terms of technology and in meeting the EU customs requirements of the Union Customs Code (UCC).

The new system offers numerous benefits for MIC’s customers, including:

  •  Secured exchange of messages
  •  Faster response times
  •  Direct communication with the authorities for imports at ports using the Goods Vehicle Movement Service (GVMS), resulting in cost savings and more efficient movement of goods.
