What to know about the US Automated Broker Interface (ABI)
The Automated Broker Interface, or ABI, is one of the key parts of the US customs system. As such, any business looking to import goods into the US must be familiar with this platform in order to ensure the process is as smooth as possible and they are reporting shipments and paying all relevant duties correctly.
According to Customs and Border Protection (CBP), 96 percent of all data filing for imports is conducted using the ABI. Therefore, if you're planning on sending goods to the US using a customs broker, you'll be expected to understand how it works. Here's what you need to know.
What is the Automated Broker Interface?
The ABI is part of the Automated Commercial Environment (ACE) platform used by CBP to track, control and process all commercial goods imported into the United States. It allows qualified organizations to file their import data electronically with CBP, track the progress of customs clearances and pay required duties from a single platform.
Among the major aims of the ABI is to streamline and simplify customs procedures. The electronic submission of essential documents - including invoices, product information and shipping details - helps minimize delays and provides more visibility into essential activities.
Participants are able to query issues such as quota status, visa requirements, manufacturer information and entry processing status via the platform. The ABI allows filers to pay multiple entries with one payment transaction through statement processing and pay customs duties, fees and taxes electronically through the Automated Clearinghouse (ACH).
What are the capabilities of the ABI platform?
CBP highlights the following features that customs filers can use when declaring imported goods to the US using the ABI system.
- File entry release data electronically for cargo release processing.
- File a consolidated entry summary, combining multiple release transactions on one entry summary.
- File consumption entries, TIB entries, FTZ entries and warehouse withdrawals.
- File selected "bypass" entry summaries electronically without providing additional paper documentation.
- Receive paperless designation for general exam entry transactions.
- Update entry dates electronically.
- Change selected shipping details on entries in CBP status up until the time cargo arrives.
- Certify entry summary for cargo release processing.
- Receive conditional cargo release results in advance.
- File drawback claims electronically.
The business benefits of using ABI
For businesses, using the ABI system can offer a range of advantages. These include:
- Faster clearances: Electronic data submission reduces delays and accelerates cargo release.
- Lower costs: Streamlined workflows cut administrative time and reduce the likelihood of costly filing errors.
- Greater accuracy: Automated validation improves data quality and supports stronger compliance with CBP requirements.
- Improved visibility: Real-time updates on entry status and duty payments enhance supply chain oversight.
- Simplified payments: Statement processing and ACH enable multiple entries to be settled in a single transaction.
The need for effective ABI software
In order to take advantage of the ABI system, businesses will need to use approved ABI software that CBP has authorized to interact with the platform and submit documentation, such as MIC-CUST® customs software. However, not all providers deliver the same capabilities. A full list of certified providers, illustrating the range of services they offer, is available from CBP here.
A comprehensive customs software solution not only allows businesses to streamline their filings with CBP through the ABI platform, it also enables them to manage a range of other reporting requirements through a single interface. This makes customs filing more efficient, as well as providing firms with a great deal of useful information they can use to optimize their processes and identify areas for improvement.
For example, when interacting with the ABI, organizations can use this information as a detailed source of historical data, which can be used to analyze trends, optimize supply chains and shipping routes and make better-informed decisions.
