Switzerland to revise its customs system

Switzerland wants to make its customs processes easier to navigate.

Switzerland is planning to totally revise and update its customs system in a bid to make it more streamlined and fit for purpose, it has been reported.

According to Wolters Kluwer Global Tax News, the Swiss Federal Council has launched a consultation on how this may be achieved, which is set to close on December 31st 2020.

It is hoped that customs, tax and duty collection for the nation can be simplified and fully digitized to strengthen Switzerland's position as a key business location, as well as helping to boost border security.

The Customs Act is to be redrafted into a new legal framework, standardizing the collection of taxes and the cross-border movement of goods and people.

In addition, customs duties and penalty provisions will be more closely governed.

Once the overhaul is complete, the Federal Customs Administration (FCA) will become the Federal Office for Customs and Border Security, an entirely new organization.

It comes after the country began its 'DaziT program' to modernize the FCA back in 2018.
